1. Title: USA increases funds to HIV / AIDS and tuberculosis programmes. Author: Nelson R Source: Lancet Infectious Diseases. 2007 Apr;7(4):250. Abstract: The US congress has approved a major increase in funding to combat AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria for fiscal year 2007. As anticipated, President George Bush signed the US$463.5 billion spending resolution (HJ Res 20), which designates an additional $1.3 billion to fund international HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis programmes. The resolution raises the contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to $724 million, an increase of $179 million or 33% compared with 2006. This is the largest contribution that the USA has ever made to the Global Fund since it was first organised 5 years ago. "This is very encouraging and will expand the fund's work", said Seth Amgott, a spokesperson for the Global Fund. "There has been a bipartisan consensus in the USA to expand funding for America's bilateral programmes, and the Global Fund has proven that it has saved thousands of lives."
