This review covers the testing of substances for fasciolocidal action, the efficacy of bromophenophos, rafoxanide, and brotianide, the effect of host physiology, particle size, and formulation of the efficacy and toxicity of anthelmintics, and the control of fascioliosis by strategic treatment of the animals, attacks on the intermediate hosts, and husbandry measures. A table compares 12 fasciolicides by giving the minimal doses necessary to remove over 90% of the immature or adult F.hepatica, the safety index for those minimal doses, and the doses recommended by the manufacturer. It is concluded that rafoxanide and brotianide are at present the safest available for effective prophylaxis and treatment of acute and chronic fascioliasis in cattle and sheep.
